You Kept Making All The Stops? A look at Comedy

By Sonny Bill Williamson On July 30, 2009 · 8 Comments · In Uncategorized

Flight Of The Conchords – genius? Or overrated? It’s great to see some boys from the South Pacific conquering America but when I hear people say that the show is “The funniest thing I’ve ever seen” I can’t help but think “Bullshit!”

Original? Yes. Brilliant at times? Yes. Funniest thing I’ve ever seen? Not even close.

Jermaine Clement and Bret McKenzie have a long way to go if they’re to match the likes of Seinfeld and David, Gervais and Merchant, Jones Gilliam Cleese Palin Chapman and Idle, Guest McKean and Shearer… the list goes on…

If anyone out there believes I am wrong feel free to let me know… but I doubt there could be any valid argument against my incredibly accurate points

I have been watching this show every week (SBS 1, Monday night @ 10pm). Given the rave reviews it would be pure madness not to follow on after SBS World News Australia (Late Edition @ 9.30pm). A relative critic I have become.

I completely agree with the perplexity that comes over me when I hear my friends say “Oh my god – did you see, aha, hahaha, aha, Flight of the Conchords last night, I laughed all the way through, funniest show ever!!!”
I am always hesitant in showing my dissatisfaction towards their unrelenting enthusiasm, dare I discourage them and have one wretched soul take offense and turn over to the latest reality television charade! I let the comment slip gently by.

I do share your sentiments Sonny Bill. Overrated. Funny for the Kiwi mannorisms, the occasional piece of quick wit and fairly entertaining awkward humour. However, I can not help but feel the Kiwi audience has been foxed through social norms and opinions into believing this is the best thing since sliced bread. It isn’t. It’s good, the first episode did genuinely make me laugh most of the way through, and I do crack a giggle a couple of times each and every episode, but a piece of comic genius for the ages it is not!
Give me David Brent, give me Jerry Seinfeld, hell, even give me Stewie Griffin any day before giving me Flight of the Conchords.
It is a good Kiwi show, I do like it, I just don’t love it! It is doing remarkably well, but I just can’t help but feel it is all a bit too repetitive and all a bit too dry.
I’ll won’t be watching next Monday. Not through spite though, I’ll be tuning into the Ashes, Day 5, Edgbaston, every ball live and exclusive on SBS 1.

i liked the first season, some moments of genius. second was below par i feel. but they are in no way a claim to greatest comedy ever…. nothing beats the shear rapture i get from locking into seinfeld, the office or early jim carrey ace ventura

I like the blurring of the lines between reality and drama. The office pioneered it and nailed it, the Conchords are also believable and clever but I cant say I have been in histerical laughing fits whilst watching. Yea they are a comedy act but they are doing something different and are highly unpredictable. Their songs and scenes are pure genius without being really funny, and I enjoy it for that. I prefer the likes of Sienfeld for giggles yes but arnt the 2 shows streaks apart? They are at the opposite end of the comedy genre, but still comedy. Not too sure they make the best comparison.

Hey Uff, no one cares what time they are on telly bro, especially if the Ashes are on!

it annoys me because i feel like i have to like it. and i hate it how i hate admitting that i don’t think it’s that funny. does that make sense?

Every great comedy that stands the test of time has a formula, flight of the conchords has that and will continue to thrive.
Sonny Bill like his namesake could do with a healthy dose of good old fashioned loyalty. The shows you talk about are trust fund babies with a plethora of bought together talent working on them, that’s set them up for success in the same way that Nicole Ritche has a career.
Dry self deprecating kiwi humour is necessary because of the seeming eagerness of the pre existing champion.
Just a hunch but im guessing uff and sonny bill also want the aussie to win the ashes

The fact that FOTC is even considered as ‘the greatest comedy ever’ and used in the same sentence as Seinfield or The Office gives the show oodles of credit. Let’s give the show the cudos it deserves rather than reverting to the NZ tall poppy syndrome.

There’s no reverting to tall poppy syndrome here CB, all you see are opinions on other people’s opinions about a comparison of comic television shows. If you feel you would like to consider “FOTC” as one of the greatest comedies ever, then go right ahead. I, for one, will not be following you.
I’ll be watching it tonight however, a reflection of the cudos I’m giving it as an original and funny television show that I enjoy.

Kudos is spelt with a K, Chaffe. Did the red squiggly line not come up?.

This article STILL pisses me off.

As does your comments. I challenge you Chaffe, to make the nation laugh louder than Bret and Jermaine make us laugh. Perhaps post the grey jocks pic. Kidding, Kidding.
