There has to be a pretty good reason to get me out of bed at 4am. And this morning it was football. All the hype of the FIFA Fan Fest in Darling Harbour was too much to resist, so I headed down to check out the floating big screen for the Australia versus Germany match.

Quite amazingly, the 4.30am kick off time had not deterred anyone, with what looked like some 40,000+ Sydneysiders piling into the area to watch the game. It was so busy in fact that I couldn’t even get in to the official area. Nor could a few thousand other pissed off locals.

Luckily a waterside cafe with multiple screens, outdoor heaters, hot coffee and big breakfasts was happy to house us and this nine year old for the match.

After reading a whinging article in the Daily Telegraph this week (Aussie journo complaining that the Germans didn’t seem to think Australia were a real threat) I took great joy watching the big stiffs prove that the Socceroos really were there for the slaughter as they fired four past the helpless men in green and gold.

Tuesday night the All Whites from New Zealand play their opening game of the World Cup. Perhaps they’ll prove to be the best performing nation from the South Pacific. If you’re looking for an alternative World Cup song, feel free to sing along to this one… My brother in law simply changes the chorus to “All Whites All The Way”. Like him, it’s genius.
