Meme’s are the new chain mail. Every week some bored and perhaps sad individuals Photoshop pictures of and/or comment on a celebrity or movie out of context either making idiots of themselves or creating a sensation; a meme. You want a depressed looking Keanu Reeves photo shopped into The Wizard of Oz or a family portrait with everyone’s favourite foreign leader Kim Jong-il? You’ve got it. The never ending celebrity break downs, terrible movies and one liners give meme creators almost daily material to work from.
One of the few really entertaining meme’s and the longest lasting is Texts From Last Night. Started in February 2009 by two friends the name says it all. Remember those texts that seem to spew from your fingertips after you accept the unmarked white pill from your newest best friend or skull the rest of that cheap wine? Embarrassing for sender but hilarious for everyone else. Call it uncreative or the pits of real culture but this internet meme is pure and true humour.
Ever sent a friend text about a horrific one night stand or perhaps been a little too forward? Welcome to the club where members include a child obsessed woman (He tried to stick it in and I asked him what he wanted to name our child and he quit) and someone who really wants to have a toga party (What would you do if you came home and I was in nothing but the table cloth?). They even Photoshop this often awkward and misspelled quotes in movie and TV stills creating on a whole new meaning to any death scene from just about every action movie from the last 20 years.
So my task for you is simple; next time you’re on Facebook at work stalking your ex’s new partner try something a little less freaky; I swear you will laugh even if your cultural snobbishness won’t let you admit it.
